September always feels like the start of the “real” news year in Linux — the summer release rush is over, students are back in school and reinstalling laptops, and the arguments that simmered through July and August finally settle into something worth summarizing. For most WNCLUG members running a mainstream distribution, 7.2 will simply arrive as part of a routine update; the more interesting story this cycle happened in the mailing lists, not the changelog.

Greg Kroah-Hartman Draws a Line on AI-Written Patches

The biggest kernel governance story of the summer came from Greg Kroah-Hartman, the maintainer of the drivers/staging subsystem and the stable kernel branch. Citing an “onslaught” of low-quality, LLM-generated patches flooding drivers/staging, he announced that the subsystem will now automatically reject AI-generated patches — with one narrow exception for genuine, verified security fixes.

The reasoning is worth understanding, not just the headline. Staging exists specifically as a low-pressure space where new kernel contributors learn the mechanics of getting code upstream; it’s full of deliberately unpolished cleanup work left there on purpose so newcomers have something real to practice on. Kroah-Hartman argued that having an AI tool “clean up” that code defeats the entire point of the subsystem existing — it isn’t that the patches are necessarily wrong, it’s that auto-generating them removes the learning experience staging was built to provide. Notably, he isn’t opposed to AI tooling generally; his own AI-assisted fuzzing work has turned up real bugs elsewhere in the kernel. Statcounter’s own “Unknown” category — traffic it can’t confidently attribute to any operating system, often VPN traffic, hardened browsers, or bot activity — made up over 9% of North American desktop traffic in the same period, and outlets that dug into the numbers more carefully attributed a meaningful share of the jump to automated, non-human traffic rather than an actual wave of new Linux installs. That doesn’t make the underlying trend fake: broader, slower-moving data (Steam’s hardware survey, StatCounter’s global desktop figures, and developer surveys) all point the same direction — Linux desktop share has been climbing steadily for two years, driven by Windows 10’s end of support, Steam Deck’s popularity, and Proton’s compatibility gains.
